The origin of TechniCare (formerly Metavo) is a classic story. Founder Arjan van de Voorde started his own business in the shed at the back of his garden, producing precision mechanical parts on a self-refurbished lathe. These products were used in various sectors, from kitchen faucets to agricultural machinery. What began as a side activity alongside his previous job quickly grew into a company that no longer fit in a shed. Over the past 25 years, TechniCare has evolved from a metalworking company into a manufacturer of innovative medical devices with international ambitions. Today, we are a close-knit family business, with the second generation having taken over the daily management of the company from founder Arjan van de Voorde.
Metavo was founded on June 1, 2000, by Arjan van de Voorde. Metavo focuses on product development and the manufacturing of precision mechanical parts. The products made by Metavo are applied in a wide range of products and sectors. Since its founding, product development has been one of the company's key activities. Developing products has been intertwined with the organization’s DNA to this day.
About two years after the founding of Metavo, Arjan developed the first products for use in hospitals. Due to the high demand for new products and solutions in the medical field, many products were developed during these years for hospital applications. As the focus increasingly shifted towards developing products for the medical sector, the company name was changed from Metavo to TechniCare.
The largest product of TechniCare is the Nascentia delivery bed. The development of this bed originated from a request from the OLVG hospital in Amsterdam. The Nascentia combines the comfort of a full-fledged hospital bed with the positions and capabilities of a delivery bed. Since 2019, the bed can be equipped with an electrically powered fifth wheel. This ensures optimal mobility, allowing one person to move the bed ergonomically with minimal effort.
An important moment in the history of TechniCare: Arjan's three sons take over the company. The takeover by Peter, André, and Richard marks the next phase for the company. Over 20 years, TechniCare has grown into a manufacturer of medical devices, and this will continue to expand in the future. The focus initially shifts to the internal organization to ensure that all people, processes, and systems are ready for further, healthy growth. This results in strategic decisions regarding the product portfolio, working and manufacturing methods, and, among other things, the implementation of an ERP system.
A little less than two years after the founding of Metavo, the steady growth of the company made the shed and garden too small to work in. In 2002, the first building was purchased on Tinstraat in Ridderkerk. The construction of the building was monitored weekly by the entire family. Three years after purchasing the first building, the adjacent building was acquired. Another three years later, the building behind it was bought, and the three buildings were merged.
When Arjan witnessed a fall incident involving a sterile IV pole, he came up with the idea for the Mobilyzer, TechniCare's first product classified as a Medical Device. After its introduction, the Mobilyzer won both the jury and audience awards at the Zorgtotaal trade fair for Best New Innovation. Several variants of the Mobilyzer were developed, and in 2024, the first model was replaced by the Mobilyzer 2.
In 2018, TechniCare began internationally marketing its products. In addition to the Dutch market, where TechniCare is growing rapidly, international sales have become part of the growth strategy. To make this possible, partnerships were started with distributors in various countries, with a focus primarily on North-Western Europe due to the demand for innovation and higher quality standards. The Nascentia delivery bed has proven to be particularly interesting for other markets, but since then, other products have also been sold outside the Netherlands.
Achieving the ISO 13485 certification (quality management system for the development and production of medical devices) is an important milestone for TechniCare. This certificate demonstrates that TechniCare operates according to a quality management system that has been tested against international standards. It also means that the internal organization is ready for further growth and that the strategy formulated in 2021 has been successfully implemented. Additionally, this certification makes it easier to export products to new markets.
